Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 2026 · Version 1.0
This policy explains what information the JOL mobile app ("JOL", "we", "us") collects, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. JOL is operated from South Africa and we process personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA). By using JOL you agree to this policy.
Who we are
JOL is the responsible party for the personal information described here. For any privacy question, data request, or to reach our Information Officer, email hello@jolapp.com.
Information we collect
Account details — your email address, display name and date of birth (to confirm eligibility and age-restricted events).
Content you create — events you host or RSVP to, your crew connections, and messages you send to your crew.
Photos — images you choose to upload, such as a profile picture or an event poster.
Location — your approximate location, collected only with your permission, to surface events near you. You can turn this off at any time in your device settings.
Notifications — a push notification token so we can send you alerts you've opted into (e.g. crew activity or events you follow).
Payments (organisers) — if you pay to boost an event, the payment is handled by our payment provider (Yoco). We receive a confirmation and record of the boost; we never see or store your full card details.
Device & usage data — basic device information and aggregated, anonymised analytics so we can fix bugs and improve the app.
Why we collect it
To deliver core features — showing you events, matching you with crew, processing RSVPs and messages, and sending notifications you've enabled; to process boost payments for organisers; to keep the platform safe by detecting fraud, abuse and prohibited content; and to improve the product through aggregated analytics. Our lawful bases under POPIA are your consent, performance of our agreement with you, and our legitimate interest in running a safe, working service.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information and we do not use it to track you across other apps or websites. We share data only with the service providers that run JOL — Supabase (database, authentication and file storage), Google Maps (mapping and geocoding), Yoco (boost payments), Resend (transactional email), and Apple, Google and Expo (push notification delivery) — and with law enforcement where we are legally required to. Some of these providers process data outside South Africa; where they do, we rely on appropriate safeguards.
How long we keep it
We keep your information for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete your personal information, except where we must retain limited records to meet a legal, tax or safety obligation.
Your rights
Under POPIA you may access, correct, or delete your personal information, object to certain processing, and lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa. In the app you can edit your profile, control the visibility of events you host, hide your address on private events, block other users, report content, and permanently delete your account from the Settings screen. To request a copy of your data, email hello@jolapp.com.
Children
JOL is not directed at children under 13, and we remove accounts found to belong to underage users. Certain events are flagged as adult-only and are restricted to users who confirm they are at least 18.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. We follow industry best practices to protect your information, though no online service can be guaranteed 100% secure.
Changes
We may update this policy as JOL evolves. Material changes will be notified in the app. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated policy.
